The Gucci Flora scarf is much more than a mere floral design - it was created almost by accident for Princess Grace of Monaco and has a close link to Sandro Botticelli's masterpieces. This 60s-era Vittorio Accornero for Gucci silk scarf is a vintage treasure. It's a stunning scene of a wintery sleigh ride -- and the promise of something more. Here is Accornero's. The Gucci Flora scarf is much more than a mere floral design - it was created almost by accident for Princess Grace of Monaco and has a close link to Sandro Botticelli's masterpieces. The Gucci Flora pattern was created in 1966 by Vittorio Accornero, an Italian artist who was commissioned by Rodolfo Gucci, grandson of the founder of the luxury fashion brand. The design was originally intended for a silk scarf that would be given as a gift to Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco.
He created over 80 scarves for Gucci, but the one that changed the history of the entire House and of this accessory was “Flora”. A square of silk sprinkled with beautiful flowers became the base on which Gucci’s dresses, handbags and jewelry would be made over the course of 50 years.
Conceived by artist and set designer Vittorio Accornero in 1966, the Gucci Flora motif started in the form of a scarf. The fantastical melange of flora and fauna composed of flowers, fruits, and insects consists of 37 colors against a stark white background. The story is that Rodolfo Gucci commissioned Accornero to design an original scarf as a gift for Princess Grace after she visited the boutique in Milan. Accornero painted nine bouquets of flowers dedicated to the four seasons.
